Juneteenth - June 19th
3 Meaningful Ways To Celebrate
Juneteenth This Year And Every Year
Juneteenth is a day of reflection that commemorates the day that federal troops marched through Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to signal the end of the Civil War and spread the word of emancipation of enslaved African Americans. That day over 250,000 freedmen and women celebrated their liberation, and the annual day of commemoration was born.
Today Juneteenth is still honored by Black Americans and non-Black Americans alike, and celebrations still resemble the original Juneteenth holiday. If you aren’t sure how you should commemorate the historic day, don’t worry. Here are 3 meaningful ways you can honor the holiday annually.
1. Wear your pride on display.
What better way to commemorate the significance of the liberation of African Americans than by sporting clothing that celebrates the rich culture of the African diaspora? Let the clothes you wear do the talking for you this Juneteenth holiday. If you cannot observe the holiday to its full effect, displaying your pride through fashion will help you feel a part of the celebration.
2. Support Black-owned businesses.
Help circulate the dollar within the Black community by supporting a Black-owned business near you. You can also explore the countless Black-owned brands found online, from home decor, lifestyle, fashion, and more.
The original Juneteenth celebrations included moments to track the economic progress of Black Americans, so supporting small businesses is an excellent way to honor this holiday.
3. Have a Juneteenth feast with your family or greater community.
Community gatherings, food, and fellowship are a significant part of Juneteenth celebrations. This year, Father’s Day falls on the day after Juneteenth, so perhaps make the holiday extra special by including the celebration of Black fatherhood, too. Black men in America, unfortunately, are mislabeled as “absent” or “inactive” fathers, so why not host a roundtable discussion on the subject to uplift Black fathers?
